Lazy Sunday

buenas tardes,

Sundays around here are pretty lazy. I hope everyone is enjoying their day of relaxation before the new week begins.

For KDT. I took the pic at the same place as the boats. They had scenery set up as if you were in the new world complete with naked "natives". Tourist trap...

For Aim. Double parked cars below my house. It is like this 24/7

Cristobal Colon (minus the accents over the letters)

Hey kids!

I don't know how to add accents to certain letters in my blog posts, so that is why a lot of the Spanish words that I type are actually incorrect. I am lazy or I would do it right :)

Last weekend our group went to La Rabida(accent over the 1st a). This is the monastery where Christopher Colombus confered with a monk about his ideas on sailing off. The monk was Queen Isabel's former confessor? and so retained much influence in Isabel's life and Colombus used the monk to get his ideas to the Queen(can we say "lobbying" anyone?). So now we have America and a "New World".

Our group also played around on life size replicas of the three ships that made the voyage. They are very very small and I definitely would not have wanted to sail on them for more than a day. I think they have similar ships in Corpus Christi...

And we went to the beach (la playa) for a couple hours and waded in the Atlantic.
It was a really nice trip overall, despite me having a cold.

Buenos Dias,
corey

All Aboard!

<----- This table was here when Colombus was in the monastery. I wonder if he sat at it?

Modern art of Colombus. Beautiful. The other painting was in a series-all pertaining to him. All had raised portions incorporated into the picture. Like this one of Christ, the circular part is raised a little. They were really amazing.

Dia de San Valentin

Hello!

All I want to do today is bake cupcakes or cookies or something. I can't wait to get back to my oven/stove/mixing bowl. But since I can't, and even though the Spanish don't really celebrate Valentine's Day to the extent of which Americans do, and even though I hate the day, I love giving and recieving V-Day cards. Like the ones you got in elementary school from your classmates. I made a few this year, and also found some on the web that are pretty funny. Enjoy-and hug a loner this Valentine's Day.

LOVE, corey

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Though I'm in Spain,
I'm thinking of you.

Still a Country Girl

Our class took an excursion to Granada, Spain this weekend. My thoughts on the trip, the sights, and the city.

We left Sevilla at 7 am and although I was tired and wanted to sleep, the countryside was so beautiful that I stayed awake. It was hills after hills of olive tree orchards and other fields. Little villages were built on mountain sides and in the sunrise, they were dotted with lights and the churchs were the most prominent building in the villages. They were scenes from a story book. I can not do the beauty of it full justice. It made me realize that the country is where I belong, and Seville just seemed dirty and claustrophobic compared to the smooth gray-green hills.

Sevilla is usually around 50-60 degrees F, and even though Granada is just a tad south of Sevilla, it is located in the Sierra Nevadas at a much higher altitude. When we got there, we first went to the Alhambra, which is the fortress/palaces of first the Moors, then Isabel and Ferdinand when they conquered Granada in 1492. If it had been a different day, I could have appreciated it more, but as it was, I was using all my energy to stay warm. It was not fun.

The same day our group also toured the Royal Chapel-where Isabel and Ferdie's bodies rest. Amazing history here.

Granada is such a beautiful city. It is a lot smaller than Seville and seemed much cleaner. I don't know if it was just the mountain air or what, but I think Granada was amazing. A few of us went shopping in the Arabic market area and just wandered the streets. I also ate the ABSOLUTELY best meal I've had in Spain so far. It was a doner kebab. It is the Turkish version of fast food where the meat is roasted on a these spits and sliced off and put in a pita or wrap along with salad, Good Lord it was delicious!!

The bus ride back again offered spectacular views of the Spanish countryside and a sunset. I previously didn't even know I missed the open air, but now I remember how peaceful and serene it is and proved how great of an artist God is.

This was a very long post so thanks for reading and looking at my pictures!

Hasta luego,
corey

05 February 2009

I live on the 6th floor and I take the stairs everyday:

Hey everyone.

No pictures today, and besides, I don't think my internet would upload any; it has been raining straight for two days. I am going to Granada (where is it going to be in the 30s and raining...more) this weekend if I make the bus this time...so I should have pictures of all that soon. But here are some things that I've noticed since I've been here:

1. Looks like global warming found its way to Spain too. We are getting tons of rain and it is not normal for this time of year. I feel like it has rained everyday I've been here.

2. Spaniards love to stare. I don't know if it is just at Americans or if it is just how they roll. But when I pass somebody on the sidewalk, we always have a stare down-and the other person always wins.

3. If Americans consumed the same amount of food, gasoline, and energy as Spaniards, we would be much better off. Economically and physically.

4. Siestas are coming back with me to Texas.

5. My showers are not going to get any warmer. I need to deal with it.

Buenos dia
